Midsummer Wakes is a street theatre and promenade performance project that animates Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre. The first event in July 2015 attracted thousands of visitors to a day of events and family attractions culminating in the Midsummer Wakes carnival parade. 2016 saw an expended programme of workshops with youth and community groups, and on a drop-in basis in a disused shop in the Ironmarket leading up to the Carnival Parade itself. The artist team worked with a number of artist placements and volunteers to create costumes, props and mobile structures. In 2016 the theme was The Four Winds and the parade saw giant birds, flocks of swallows, a mobile castle and the giant Blue Girl process through the town centre, welcomed by the Newcastle town crier.
